Introduction:

Hello! I’m someone who loves traveling with my family, and I often plan vacations during school holidays. Occasionally, I’ll even organize shorter trips with friends. Our preferred mode of transportation is by car, and we usually opt to stay in apartments during our travels. It’s always an exciting adventure!

Many people are intrigued by the wild adventures my family embarks on, comprising my wife and our two daughters, aged four and a half, and fourteen. Despite the potential chaos, the truth is, we relish our journeys across Europe, cruising along the roads in our trusty wheels. The diverse landscapes, cultures, and experiences we encounter along the way create lasting memories for each one of us.

This summer holiday proved to be no exception to our tradition of travel, yet it unfolded with its own unique rhythm. The planning process for this particular journey held a different pace; it took me a while to meticulously lay out the intricate details of the entire trip. As I delved into the maps, researched destinations, and considered various routes, I found myself embracing the task with a sense of purpose and anticipation. The effort invested in crafting this adventure only heightened the sense of excitement, making each step of the planning process a meaningful endeavor in its own right.

Embarking on a 19-day odyssey that spanned across 4700 kilometers, our journey unfolded through the heart of Europe, traversing seven distinct countries. With a spirit of exploration as our compass, we ventured through a tapestry of landscapes and cultures, immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of experiences each destination had to offer. Our footprints graced approximately 78 unique locales, each unveiling its own tale, its own charm. Along the way, we found rest in eight different abodes, each becoming a temporary sanctuary where we could reflect upon the day’s adventures and prepare for the discoveries that awaited us in the next horizon. As I prepare to chronicle this remarkable expedition, the very essence of our voyage lies within these facts – a testament to the vibrant mosaic of memories that was woven across the expanse of those captivating 19 days.

As the summer sun painted the European landscape with warmth and splendor, my family embarked on an unforgettable journey, traversing the charming roads of Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Switzerland, and France. Packed with excitement and wanderlust, we set out on a remarkable adventure that would create lasting memories for years to come.

Our journey was an adrenaline-fueled symphony of extraordinary experiences that traversed the realms of both nature’s wonders and cultural treasures. We delved into the mesmerizing depths of the sea, discovering a kaleidoscope of marine life through exhilarating sessions of snorkeling. Kayaking in the boundless expanse of the ocean, we uncovered hidden coves and secluded beaches, where the rhythmic lapping of the waves became our serenade. Venturing into the heart of the earth, we embarked on an awe-inspiring hike through a mystical cave, its ancient formations a testament to the passage of time.

In an act of heart-pounding courage, we stood at the precipice, taking a leap of faith and plunging into the azure sea below, cliff jumping becoming a thrilling dance with gravity. Cycling along the tranquil periphery of a glistening lake, the wind whispering past, we connected intimately with the natural world. Embarking on island hopping adventures, we navigated the waters to encounter diverse cultures, each island a tapestry of traditions and landscapes waiting to be explored.

Walking through the corridors of history, we traced the footprints of bygone eras, where weathered walls and cobblestone streets spoke volumes of ancient tales. Steering our way through treacherous coastal roads, the rugged beauty of dangerous coastlines mirrored the audacity of our expedition. In the shadow of an iconic wonder of the world, we marveled at human ingenuity, standing humbled before a testament to human achievement. Indulging our taste buds, we savored the intoxicating flavors of local beers and culinary delights, each dish a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation.

Our odyssey was a vibrant tapestry of adrenaline, discovery, and cultural immersion, each activity weaving a vibrant thread into the fabric of our unforgettable journey.

I want to say a big thank you to my wonderful wife for taking such great photos and videos for my channel. You really made everything look fantastic! A special thanks to my older daughter for picking out the best places to eat in different locations. It added a lot of fun to our trip. And to my youngest one, thank you so much for being patient and helpful during the whole journey. Your cooperation meant a lot to all of us. I appreciate each of you for making this adventure awesome!

During the span of 19 days, each day offered us a different experience, prompting me to divide our entire travel escapade into separate chapters. I heavily relied on Tesla’s Google Maps for navigation, ensuring we stayed on the right path. In the initial planning phase, I used Google to find interesting places to visit, and I checked the weather on BBC Weather to prepare accordingly. When it came to booking accommodations, I diligently searched on platforms like booking.com and adriatic.hr (especially for our time in Croatia). All these efforts combined resulted in a diverse and memorable journey, with each day holding its own unique charm.

Chapter 1: Setting Off on an Electric Expedition

Concerns about traveling in electric cars, especially on long trips with family, often stem from uncertainties surrounding charging times. People worry that battery recharging might extend their journey duration significantly. Additionally, there’s a common fear about the availability of charging stations along the route. These concerns are valid to some extent, as electric vehicles do require more planning when it comes to refueling compared to traditional gasoline cars. However, it’s worth noting that the electric vehicle charging infrastructure is rapidly expanding, with more charging stations being installed across highways and popular travel routes. Moreover, advancements in battery technology have led to faster charging speeds, reducing the overall time spent at charging stations. As the electric vehicle market continues to grow, these obstacles are likely to become less daunting, making electric car travel a more feasible and efficient option for families embarking on long journeys.

During my travels through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and Switzerland, I found reliable charging options for my electric vehicle. However, Croatia proved to be quite different, with limited charging facilities, especially on the islands accessible by ferry. Despite the challenges, these experiences added a sense of adventure to my vacation, reminding me that a bit of excitement is essential. I’m eager to share the details of my unconventional journey, offering fellow explorers the information they need to embark on a similar trip and make informed decisions along the way.

Our European expedition commenced on a crisp Monday morning, August 31st. With the soft hum of our Tesla Model 3 Long Range as our soundtrack, we bid farewell to Amsterdam at the early hour of 3:00 am. The anticipation in the air was palpable as we eagerly embraced the road ahead, our family of four sharing a common dream of exploration.

Chapter 2: Journeying Through Austria’s Alpine Splendor

The road unfolded before us, winding through picturesque landscapes as we ventured into Austria. Innsbruck, our first destination, welcomed us with open arms after a 10-hour drive covering a distance of 921 km. Along the way, we made four stops for supercharging, a testament to the efficiency and convenience of electric travel.

Our stay took place in a quaint one-bedroom apartment nestled in Hall in Tirol, a charming town situated roughly 20 km away from bustling Innsbruck. While the parking arrangements required a brief stroll from the apartment, and the absence of an elevator added a touch of adventure, we found immense pleasure in our stay. The novelty of cooking our own meals for the very first time brought an enjoyable sense of accomplishment. Following an extended journey, the first night’s sleep proved to be wonderfully refreshing, allowing us to fully savor the tranquility after our travels.

In Innsbruck, the Swarovski Museum awaited us with its sparkling allure. Mesmerizing crystals and dazzling artworks painted a vivid tapestry of artistic expression. As we marveled at the craftsmanship that transformed mere minerals into treasures of light, we couldn’t help but be enchanted by the world of Swarovski.

Chapter 3: Slovenian Serenity

Leaving Austria behind, we crossed into Slovenia, where the beauty of Lake Bled and the tranquility of Postjana Cave left an indelible mark on our souls. We embarked on our journey from Innsbruck on Tuesday, August 1st, starting at noon 12–00. Covering a distance of approximately 450 km, our expedition to Logatech consumed around 6 hours of travel time. Throughout the trip, we made two pit stops to charge the car, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted adventure. Despite unfavorable weather conditions and reduced visibility during the evening, our journey was made considerably safer and more manageable thanks to the auto-drive feature of the Tesla. As a result, we were able to arrive safely at our destination in Logatech by 10:00 pm. The advanced technology played a crucial role in ensuring a secure and successful travel experience despite the challenging circumstances.

During our two-night stay in Slovenia, we lodged in a comfortable 2BHK apartment that amounted to 236 Euro. Despite a rainy arrival late at night, our hosts warmly welcomed us. We embarked on memorable explorations, including visits to the enchanting Lake Bled and the captivating Postjana Cave. An enjoyable toy train ride allowed us to appreciate the beauty of Lake Bled, while an electric bike rental granted us the freedom to traverse its picturesque periphery.

“Embarking on a day filled with enchantment and discovery, Lake Bled welcomed us with its serene beauty and a promise of unforgettable experiences. Our adventure commenced with a whimsical ride aboard a charming toy train, a delightful hour-long journey encircling the azure waters of the lake. Gently winding through picturesque trails, it offered glimpses of Bled Castle perched proudly atop the cliffs, setting the stage for the day’s escapades.

Eager to immerse ourselves in the natural splendor, we seized the opportunity to rent bicycles, pedaling along the scenic pathways embracing the lake’s perimeter. The refreshing breeze and stunning panoramas of the Julian Alps created an idyllic backdrop, inviting us to relish every moment of this picturesque excursion.

Our spirits soaring, we embarked on a boat ride to Blejski otok, the enchanting island adorned with the Church of the Assumption. The tranquility of the lake’s waters mirrored the peace found within the walls of this historic church, a serene retreat amidst the emerald-green surroundings.

The pinnacle of our culinary escapade awaited – the legendary Kremsnita, a local delicacy boasting layers of indulgent puff pastry, velvety custard, and clouds of whipped cream. Each delectable bite was a symphony of flavors, a sweet crescendo to our day of exploration.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, casting a golden hue upon the lake, we departed with hearts full of cherished memories. Lake Bled, with its kaleidoscope of experiences, had woven itself into the fabric of our travel tales, leaving an indelible mark on our souls.”

A visit to Postojna Cave, in the following day, is an absolute must when exploring Slovenia. This meticulously organized cave tour presents an unforgettable experience. Spanning approximately 2 hours, the tour covers a distance of 11 km within the cave’s intricate depths. The journey commences with a scenic train ride that transports you 6 km into the heart of the cave, followed by an invigorating hike through its stunning passages. Postojna Cave is a unique gem where you can marvel at the breathtaking beauty of cave formations, including the exquisite and rare brilliant formations. Additionally, a delightful encounter with the intriguing “baby dragons” adds an enchanting touch to this remarkable subterranean adventure.

Our stay was a delightful blend of cozy accommodation, hospitable hosts, and remarkable adventures.

Chapter 4: Croatian Charms

At 1:30 pm, we successfully wrapped up our exploration of the captivating Postjana Cave. Our timing was impeccable, ensuring that we were right on schedule. A quick check on Google Maps informed us that our anticipated arrival at Split terminal would be 8:00 pm, a mere half-hour after the crucial 7:30 pm ferry departure time. This final ferry of the day was essential, and we were well aware of the necessity to make it. Over the course of our 500 km journey, which spanned approximately 6 hours due to necessary charging breaks, we made two stops to recharge our vehicle’s batteries. One of these refreshing pauses took place at Senja, a picturesque beach destination in Croatia.

At Senja Super Charging station, a stunning oasis nestled along the shoreline, an unexpected twist of events unfolded. With only four charging stations available, I arrived to find each spot already occupied, a queue of three patient vehicles awaiting their turn. The backdrop of the beach lent an air of tranquility, yet the scorching heat reminiscent of an Indian Summer, with temperatures soaring to 38 degrees, created a unique contrast. Eager to recharge their electric companions, drivers indulged in a refreshing swim, leaving their cars connected for approximately an hour. Amidst this idyllic scene, a lone charging station stood unoccupied, an idle opportunity that perhaps went unnoticed amidst the vacationer’s desire for leisure and relaxation.

I had to wait for about 2 hours before I could plug in my Blue Model-3 for charging, since all the charging ports were occupied and cars were charging at the same time. It wasn’t as quick as I thought it would be when I made my plan. The charging process itself took around an hour to complete. While waiting, we took a leisurely stroll along the coastline and savored delicious Mediterranean cuisine. The cost of the food was quite affordable, coming to only 45 Euros for two adults and one child.

Our story begins at 5:30 pm, when we set out on a journey full of surprises. The road ahead was long, and we had to travel a lot. We knew we might miss the last ferry, but we were ready for an adventure. Our tale is about facing challenges, making friends, and exploring new places. Even though we didn’t catch the ferry, something wonderful happened. Our journey became an unforgettable experience, showing us that sometimes the unexpected can lead to amazing things. So, come along with us as we travel down the road, not knowing what’s around the corner, but excited to find out!

In a bind in Split, we scoured Booking.com for a place to rest due to a missed ferry. Alas, the options were a budgetary nightmare. Just when all seemed lost, our Hvar Island host emerged with a lifeline: the last ferry from Drvenik at 10:30 PM. Despite a daunting 100-km drive, we sped in time to reach the ferry, opting for Sucuraj over Sterry Gard, the distant Hvar Island port. Spirits soared with this alternate route.

Our math predicted Jelsa by 12:30 AM. A quick message to our host shared the news, sparking her delight. Aboard the ferry, the Adriatic Sea unveiled its grandeur, the full moon lighting our way. Laughter and awe swirled as the moon painted the night sky, an enchanting dance we hadn’t anticipated. The clock struck 11:15 PM, Sucuraj port came into view, and happiness enveloped us all.

Alone on a narrow road, darkness blanketed my journey, no other car in sight. My headlights fought valiantly against the night, revealing just a sliver of the path ahead. Tension gripped the car, an unspoken unease palpable. Silence ruled, the absence of music only amplifying the isolation.

As the wheels turned, their soft rhythm was my only companion, interrupted by the distant symphony of crickets. Their unseen chorus added an eerie touch to the night, stirring a sense of mystery and even a hint of fear. In this haunting ambiance, I couldn’t help but recall a famous line by William Wordsworth: “I wandered lonely as a cloud.”

The line echoed in my mind, resonating with the solitude of the moment. The contrast between the poem’s serene imagery and my current reality was stark. While Wordsworth found beauty in his solitude, I grappled with the unfamiliarity of the road ahead. The night held its secrets close, and my heart quickened as I continued to navigate the enigmatic path.

Yet, amidst the apprehension, there was a certain allure to the darkness. It was as if I had ventured into a realm untouched by the hustle of the day, a canvas painted by the brushstrokes of the night. The road, narrow and winding, seemed like a bridge between two worlds – the familiar daylight and the enigmatic realm of the unknown.

As I carried on, guided solely by the headlights, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate dance between light and shadow. Each twist and turn held a promise, a chance encounter with something unseen. The crickets’ song, once unsettling, became a haunting melody that underscored the quiet drama of the night.

In time, the road widened, and a hint of civilization emerged on the horizon. The spell of isolation began to lift, replaced by the hum of distant activity. Yet, I carried the memory of that solitary drive with me, a reminder of the unique connection I shared with the night – a connection woven by darkness, uncertainty, and the echoes of Wordsworth’s timeless words.

The clock had just struck 12:30 AM, ushering in the new day, a tired group of travelers in Croatia found themselves battling weariness and hunger. And then, a heartwarming surprise unfolded, revealing Croatia’s true essence. Despite the late hour, the weary travelers were met with a warm and genuine welcome from their host. It was a testament to the Croatian spirit – one of hospitality and generosity that transcended time and circumstance.

A quick decision was made, and a whirlwind 30-minute cooking session ensued, yielding a simple yet satisfying dinner. But as if on cue, rain began to cascade from the heavens, a torrential downpour that matched the travelers’ weary spirits.

Raindrops danced on the roof like a symphony of nature’s percussion instruments, providing a soothing backdrop to the scene. The hurriedly prepared meal was devoured with gusto, the taste of sustenance erasing the fatigue of the day’s unexpected events. As if granting respite, the rain intensified, as though washing away the remnants of their trials.

Amidst the rhythmic drumming of raindrops, the youngest members of the group surrendered to slumber, the gentle lullaby of the rain serenading them into dreams. Each breath seemed to synchronize with the falling rain, their cares melting away with every exhale.

While the others drifted into peaceful rest, a lone figure remained awake, captivated by the symphony of the storm. With a Croatian beer in hand, a token from a highway gas station, the night took on a different allure. The lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the darkness with its electric glow, while the thunder’s rumble echoed through the night like a majestic beast announcing its presence.

In the midst of this tempestuous embrace, the traveler found solace. The rain-kissed air invigorated his senses, the energy of the storm coursing through his veins. It was a communion with nature, a reminder of the beauty that exists beyond the confines of the mundane.

As the night wore on, the rain gradually subsided, leaving behind a refreshed world. The travelers, now united by shared experiences and the enchantment of the storm, slept soundly, their dreams interwoven with memories of a night that had brought them closer to the heart of Croatia – a place where rain, thunderstorms, warm embraces, and unexpected camaraderie converged to create an unforgettable tale.

The azure waters mirrored the sky, creating a sense of serenity that enveloped us. Moving on to Croatia, we were captivated by the historic charm of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and the breathtaking Adriatic coastline.

Chapter 5: Italian Delights and Culinary Adventures

Our journey continued into the heart of Italy, a land synonymous with art, culture, and gastronomy. From the romance of Venice’s waterways to the grandeur of Florence’s Renaissance architecture, Italy offered a sensory feast for the soul. The aroma of authentic Italian cuisine wafted through the streets, tempting us to indulge in pasta, gelato, and espresso.

Chapter 6: Alpine Marvels in Switzerland

Switzerland beckoned us with its majestic alpine vistas and impeccable precision. The Swiss landscapes seemed straight out of a fairy tale, with lush valleys, pristine lakes, and snow-capped peaks. As we explored cities like Lucerne and Interlaken, we found ourselves in awe of nature’s masterpiece and the Swiss commitment to quality.

Chapter 7: Embracing French Elegance and History

Our journey concluded in France, a country that effortlessly blends timeless elegance with vibrant modernity. Paris, the “City of Lights,” enchanted us with its iconic landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre Museum. The quaint villages of Provence and the stunning beauty of the French Riviera showcased the diverse facets of this captivating nation.

Epilogue: A Tapestry of Memories

As our summer odyssey drew to a close, we reflected on the tapestry of memories woven across Europe. From the intimate moments shared with family to the awe-inspiring sights that left us breathless, each experience was a thread in the fabric of our journey. Our Tesla Model 3 had not only carried us across borders but also symbolized our commitment to sustainable travel.

As the sun set on our European escapade, we returned to Amsterdam with hearts full of gratitude and a newfound appreciation for the wonders of the world. Our summer sojourn had transformed us, igniting a lifelong passion for exploration and a deeper connection to the diverse cultures that make our planet so extraordinary.
